Biography:
Dana grew up knowing she wanted to be an artist and took her drawing pad with her while she walked through the neighborhoods to draw whatever seemed interesting. By the time she reached middle and high school, she was able to get into a few art classes. Dana went on to college down in Southern California where she majored in Ceramics and minored in Jewelry and was presented with the "Highest Achievement in Art Award." During this time she was also juried into several galleries for her ceramic "atmospheric orbs" and won the HG Daniel's Purchase Award for one of her ceramic pieces. Every piece that was submitted to the galleries was sold. Dana met her husband Michael in California and she convinced him to take her back to Oregon. She makes her own custom clothing when she has time and loves to create a special piece of jewelry to coordinate with her ensemble. Dolls were a perfect solution for using her fabric scraps and now sells her soft-sculpture art dolls to friends and collectors. Dana is currently working on a series of dolls that will become the inspiration for an illustrated children's book. A class for Art Clay Silver was advertised and Dana's love for clay and jewelry were the catalyst for trying this amazing medium. She was thrilled at the things she could do and wanted to share this enthusiasm with other people. She became a Senior Instructor and has been teaching since 2002. Dana belongs to the Portland Bead Society, the Depot Dolls, the Columbia Gorge Polymer Clay Guild, and knits with a group of friends as often as they can get together. Soon she will have her dolls and her jewelry on her website for all to see. |
Philosophy:
I do what I do because I need to. Using my hands to create something that gives me joy, helps me heal, or just to play with an idea is a function of my well being. I do not do this for the accolades or the praise, although it is accepted with gratitude, but because it has to happen for me to endure and survive. I believe that everyone has a passion that begins as a seed when they are young. I played with plastic beads and loved to draw from a very early age. Throughout my life I kept coming back to that primary interest and found that it was truly a passion. To keep the energy fresh I kept trying new things that involved working with my hands. There was a time when my job was so stressful that I have no energy to create anything. I felt like I was literally dying. I left that job and I now know that I must create to live well. Look at what made you excited as a child, see how that has followed you through your life and maybe there you will find your passion.
