Artist Of The Month - June 2010
What do you love about Art Clay?
The Art Clay Community offers opportunities to learn through self education, classroom education, and certification classes. Metal clay has attracted instructors from diverse backgrounds who have successfully experimented with combining their mediums with Art Clay. Their results are willingly shared through classroom instruction, books and tutorials. This is a medium that is receptive to constant growth and experimentation. |
What are your favorite Art Clay projects/creations?
The process of working out a new design that might become a favorite encourages me to experiment. Will the construction work? Am I proficient enough in a new technique to make the design work? Will the design and construction work together to make an attractive wearable piece? Usually at some point the original design will take a turn on its own and in trying to salvage something that "didn’t quite work out" a new favorite is created! |
What other media do you work and/or teach in?
Recently I joined a Rock and Mineral Club and learned how to slab rock and cut cabochons. Fused glass has caught my attention in the last 2 years, I try to keep an open mind when I open the kiln to not be too surprised by unexpected color changes or movement of the glass. I love incorporating fused glass into my metal clay work.
The classes I currently teach are Metal Clay, Basic, Advanced, Certification, and Copper Clay. I also teach Chain Maille, Wire Work, Basic Metal Smithing, and Beadweaving. These classes are held at the Community College of Southern Maryland and 2 local bead shops. I also teach group and private lessons in my home studio. |
Biography:
Barbara Diane Hance comes to Art Jewelry from a broad background of seemingly unrelated media; among them, culinary arts, quilting, dressmaking, needlework, drawing, and watercolor.
She has discovered that the creative process is the same no matter what media you use, skills are accumulated, transferred and selectively applied to each new project. Consideration for color, texture, design and careful execution apply to all forms of art work.
Barbara has been teaching metal clay and jewelry making since 2005. Her work is featured in local galleries, boutiques, and on her website: www.adornmentsbydiane.com.
Barbara wishes to continue to develop new skills, refine the old ones, and share what she learns with others through teaching. |
Philosophy:
To me life is a continual process of learning, growing and developing. We alternate between having the opportunity to teach at times, and the pleasure of being the student at others.
Teaching has been my joy throughout my career. It allows me to be a part of the creative process of each student for awhile. The response from students when they master new material, which first seemed impossible, is very rewarding. Every class I have taught I have learned something new from my students as well.
I consider myself very fortunate to work in a medium that lends itself to design, creativity and experimentation. All the elements that make teaching and working in this medium rewarding and fun! |
Awards / Recognition:
In 2005, I received a Certification in PMC from RIO Grande and Level I and Level II Certifications from PMC Connection. In 2006, I received my Level One and Level II Certifications from Art Clay World. I continued to fulfill the necessary requirements and in 2006 became a Senior Instructor for Art Clay World. My most recent Certification, Level 3 from PMC Connection, was achieved in 2007. |
