Artist Of The Month - October 2008
What do you love about Art Clay? What’s not to LOVE! You can create a wonderful, one–of–a–kind piece of jewelry in a couple hours that would take you days to complete in a traditional metals studio! I love the "instant" gratification aspect of the product, but also, the low impact process of working with the material. |
What are your favorite Art Clay projects/creations? I really enjoy incorporating fused glass into my projects–the Art Clay adds such a finished appearance to the glass. Lately, I’ve been carving rubber stamps out of my own drawings and doodles–I’ve been really excited about being able to add more of myself to the pieces I’ve done. |
What other media do you work and/or teach in? I also do traditional silversmithing, chainmaille, fused glass and work with textiles–fabric design and embellishment, sewing, needle felting and wet felting.

Biography: I was always creative as a child, but as college and career became a focus, the creative spirit fell by the wayside. Busy with my nursing career, I found myself in teaching and leadership roles that where very satisfying. Nursing has been very good to me over the years, but I started to feel I needed something more to balance out my life. I have had horses since I was in 5th grade and they have always been one of my great loves and a great stress relief for me. Always on the lookout for unique horse/equestrian jewelry, I usually had to settle for mass produced, generic pieces. Then I discovered Art Clay Silver at the Embellishment show in Portland, Oregon (it’s been just a fewwww…years ago)! My mind went crazy with all the possibilities! It took me a few more years to find Lisa Kwaske (then Kunz) teaching here in the Portland area. She was an amazing teacher and mentored me through to my Senior Instructor Certification. Life has changed in its focus since then–I’ve realized that nursing is a great job, but just that, a job. Thankfully, I like what I do. What I love doing is sharing Art Clay with others, either through teaching a class or selling one of my pieces to someone that "just has to have it!" |
Philosophy: I hear it everywhere, "I’m just not creative–I could never do that". Creativity is inside all of us but our lives have just gotten in the way! These are the people I hope to touch and help them unlock their spirit within! As adults, we need to learn again how to play, to let go, to allow ourselves time to rejuvenate. It’s always so exciting to see a student’s eyes light up when they finish a wonderful piece and realize they can do this! |
