Artist Of The Month - July 2010
What do you love about Art Clay?
I really love the versatility of Art Clay. It can be textured and formed and used to construct hollow forms. Designs can be organic or crisp and geometric. I’m constantly finding new ways to use it in my designs. |
What are your favorite Art Clay projects/creations?
My favorite project is usually the one I’m working on right now. Currently I am experimenting with the new Art Clay Copper. Lots of exciting new stuff! |
What other media do you work and/or teach in?
I taught photography and art for many years at the high school level. I have worked in traditional metalworking techniques, enameling and polymer clay. I also studied weaving and the fiber arts at the university. I occasionally work in all these medium. |
Biography:
I taught art for many years before moving on to teaching technology in the high school library. I really missed creating jewelry so I joined my local polymer clay guild and worked with it for a number of years before discovering Art Clay. I took a workshop at Gwen Gibson’s retreat in France with Jonna Faulkner and was immediately hooked! I worked toward certification and became a Senior instructor in 2006. I have been teaching ever since.
I have a Bachelor of Arts in Art Education and a Master of Library and Information Science from San Jose State University. I have been married for over 25 years and have 2 wonderful adult children. I’m looking forward to the time I will be able to retire from my high school teaching position and devote my time to what I really love, creating jewelry. I am a member of the South Bay Polymer Clay Guild, San Francisco Bay Area Metal Clay Guild as well as Art Clay Society and PMC Guild. |
Philosophy:
Each one of us has a creative being within. Take the time to find that creativity and let it out. Being able to express myself through art gives me my greatest satisfaction. |
Awards / Recognition:
Last summer, at the Art Clay World Conference in Chicago, Alan Revere gave me a special award for best design for the piece I created for the "Brown Bag Challenge". I was thrilled because I have admired Alan’s work for years. I still wear the earrings I bought from him when he sold his work at the American Crafts Council show in San Francisco in the 80’s. |
